The PlayStation's SPU provides 24 hardware audio voices, each playing 16-bit ADPCM samples with individual ADSR envelopes. The SPU includes a hardware reverb processor and supports CD-quality streaming audio from disc, enabling a dramatic leap in music fidelity over cartridge-based consoles.
