The Genesis combines a Yamaha YM2612 FM synth chip (6 FM voices, one convertible to a PCM DAC) with a legacy SN76489 PSG (3 square + 1 noise). The YM2612's rich FM synthesis gives the Genesis its distinctive gritty, punchy sound.
